The Toyota Prius has been around for 20+ years, and with it came some changes to help keep it fresh in the everchanging automotive world. Together we'll look at the different generations and how they differ from one another, also taking a closer look at the changes certain year models have. These are some ways how the Toyota Prius has changed over the years to help give you a better idea on which car is right for you.
Key Takeaways:
- The best generation of Prius you can look for is the third being that we know everything it comes with.
- If you're wanting something unique, you can look for a Nightshade edition.
- The fourth generation was among the most fuel efficient vehicles in the US, making it perfect for those who want something modern, while still being environmentally conscious.
- 20 years after its release, the Prius finally got the recognition it deserved, being car of the year in 2024, but looking at its features, both inside and out, it should've had that recognition years ago.
First Generation (1997-2002)
While the Prius was manufactured and on the roads in Japan first, the Prius didn't hit the North American market until 2001, and when it did, it was something special. This model of Prius was aimed specifically at North American drivers and came with more power than its other counterparts.
Electric power steering is standard for first gen Prius’ and while it can seat five, the battery pack restricted cargo space. This generation saw three separate trims, these trims were the Standard, Base, and Touring.
Second Generation (2003-2008)
When this generation came around, the Prius started to find its footing in the North American market. Now marketed as a compact liftback, it came with redistributed mechanical, and interior space, meaning that rear-seat passengers had more leg room. This generation was also more environmentally friendly despite being longer than the first generation.
This generation of Prius also used an all-electric A/C compressor which was an industry first. This helps you stay cool without putting out more pollution.
Third Generation (2009-2014)
This generation saw even more improvements, as well as new features to help the driver feel more confident behind the wheel. Hitting the roads in 2010, this generation was equipped with three driving modes. These were EV mode, Eco mode, and Power mode. EV mode was designed for low-speed operation, Eco mode was the best for fuel efficiency, while Power mode gave the best performance.
This generation also came with some optional features to help give you, and the car the best ride possible. The most unique feature was the solar-PV roof panels. These panels helped keep the vehicle cooler in the summer, while also providing some power to the vehicle.
Other optional features included intelligent parking assist, lane keep assist, and dynamic radar cruise control. These were aimed at making the Prius a safer vehicle than others on the market.
To help keep things even more environmentally friendly, this generation used a range of plant-derived ecological bioplastics. This was wood, or even grass-derived cellulose in place of petroleum.
Fourth Generation (2015-2021)
The 4th generation hit the roads in North America in 2016. This was the first Prius generation using the Toyota New Global Architecture platform. This gave the Prius a lower center of gravity, as well as increased structural rigidity.
The 2018 model ranked as the second most fuel efficient gas powered vehicle that doesn't come with plug-in capabilities. 2019 saw a facelift to the vehicle, and for North America that meant that you can now find an all-wheel drive model.
2022 saw a unique Prius for the North American market, and this took form in the Nightshade edition. Much like other Nightshades, this came with black exterior trim pieces, with three colors to help make it pop.
Fifth Generation (2022-Present)
This is the most up to date generation of Pruis, and with it comes some of the best features. This generation comes with three trims, the LE, XLE, and Limited. All coming with optional all-wheel drive if that’s your preference. This generation also holds the distinction of being MotorTrend's Car of the Year in 2024 with them calling it the “gold-standard hybrid”.
Being that this generation is so new, it's hard to know what it holds for the future of it, but looking back at the other generations, you can be sure it will be special.
